About this opportunity

The National Library of Medicine is soliciting applications for research grants to advance personal health informatics approaches that deliver actionable insights to individuals, with applications due January 7, 2027. The grant supports novel informatics and data science methods enabling individuals to understand and improve their health through innovative personal health data collection, integration, analysis, and personalized risk assessments.

Eligible applicants include tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, and other entities including Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based and community-based organizations, federal agencies, regional organizations, and non-domestic entities.

Applications must incorporate end-user engagement and real-world evaluation to inform design of generalizable, reusable, and scalable personal health informatics tools, systems, and platforms. The program particularly encourages applications addressing how informatics tools and platforms can best present results, interpretation, and limitations of personalized assessments to benefit individual health understanding and improvement.

The opportunity is assigned to two parent grant programs: Mental Health Research Grants (CFDA 93.242) and Medical Library Assistance (CFDA 93.879). The Medical Library Assistance program funds discrete scientific research projects using biomedical informatics and data science methods to improve human health, with recent awards ranging from approximately $229 thousand to $1.35 million. Clinical trial inclusion is optional for this R01 mechanism.
