About this opportunity

The Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management is seeking applications for a Cooperative Agreement to develop low-cost, thermodynamically stable, high-temperature, oxygen-conducting, Reversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (R-SOFCs) systems. The objective is to overcome key technical challenges with R-SOFC systems, such as reducing total electrical resistance, increasing steam/hydrogen utilization, lowering capital cost, and improving efficiency and degradation rate. The FOA has one area of interest focused on R&D to reduce long-term degradation of oxygen-conducting SOFCs and SOECs under high current density and high steam inlet concentration. Successful projects are expected to validate concepts at a laboratory-scale (TRL 4). Full applications are due on December 2, 2024, and awards are expected to be made by May 15, 2025.

This opportunity is funded under the Fossil Energy Research and Development (CFDA 81.089) program, which supports a wide range of projects aimed at minimizing the environmental impacts of fossil fuels. Recent federal grant awards have ranged from approximately $250,000 to over $100 million, with project periods typically between 1-5 years. Projects are expected to be performed at locations across the United States, including research facilities, pilot plants, industrial sites, and field demonstrations.
