About this opportunity

The Office on Violence Against Women is soliciting applications from federally recognized tribal governments for the Fiscal Year 2026 Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction (STCJ) Grant Program, with applications due August 11, 2026. Only tribal governments are eligible to apply.

The program supports tribes in preparing to exercise or currently exercising STCJ over non-Indians who commit covered crimes within the tribe's jurisdictional boundaries. Covered crimes are assault of tribal justice personnel, child violence, dating violence, domestic violence, obstruction of justice, sexual violence, sex trafficking, stalking, and violation of a protection order. Awards fund development of criminal justice infrastructure, prosecution and defense capacity, victim services, training, and technical assistance.

Recent awards under this program (CFDA 16.025) have ranged from $186,365 to $1,710,078, with performance periods typically spanning 24 to 60 months. The program notice of funding opportunity specifies award selection criteria and will include information regarding length of awards. Applicants must demonstrate the tribe's capacity and commitment to prosecuting non-Indian offenders for covered crimes, providing indigent defense counsel, ensuring due process protections, and protecting victims' rights within the tribe's jurisdictional boundaries.

Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov and the Department of Justice's JustGrants System. Financial records and supporting documents must be retained for three years from the date of submission of the final expenditure report. Renewals are considered on a case-by-case basis, and applicants will be notified by the end of the fiscal year. Award recipients must comply with the current version of the DOJ Financial Grants Management Guide.
