About this opportunity
The Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women is soliciting applications from Indian tribal governments for grants to strengthen criminal justice responses to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and stalking in tribal communities, with applications due September 1, 2026.
Eligible applicants are federally recognized Indian tribal governments or authorized designees of tribal governments. The term "tribal government" includes the governing body of an Indian tribe; a tribe, band, pueblo, nation, or other organized group or community of Indians; and any Alaska Native village or regional or village corporation recognized as eligible for special programs and services provided by the United States to Indians because of their status as Indians.
Recent awards under this program have ranged from approximately $307,000 to $1,300,000, typically covering 24 to 36-month performance periods. Award amounts and length of performance periods are specified in the annual notice of funding opportunity. Funds are released on an as-needed basis to the grantee.
All work must be performed within tribal jurisdictions to serve American Indian and Alaska Native populations. Supported activities include victim advocacy and legal services, emergency shelter and transitional housing, law enforcement training and coordination, tribal justice system strengthening, community education and prevention initiatives, and culturally appropriate healing and support services. Many projects incorporate traditional and culturally-specific healing practices.
Applicants must apply through Grants.gov and the Department of Justice's JustGrants System. Renewals are considered on a case-by-case basis. Award selection criteria are specified in the program notice of funding opportunity. Recipients must comply with the current DOJ Financial Grants Management Guide and retain financial records, supporting documents, and statistical records for three years from the date of submission of the final expenditure report.
The assistance listing number is 16.587.
