About this opportunity
The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) is offering the Fiscal Year 2025 Expanding Legal Services Initiative - Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program. This grant opportunity aims to expand legal representation available to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking by funding organizations with a history of providing direct services to these victims, but that do not currently offer in-house legal representation. The initial award includes a planning phase during which recipients will engage in training and technical assistance to set up a legal department. Continuation funds will then support the direct legal services provided by the established legal department. Eligible applicant types include non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal governments, and tribal organizations. Applications are due by January 28, 2025.
Recent Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) grant awards have typically ranged from $400,000 to $750,000 for 2-3 year project periods. Funded projects often focus on serving underserved populations and many awardees partner with local victim service providers to deliver holistic legal and support services. The Department of Justice is the primary funding agency, providing Project Grants to nonprofit organizations and tribal entities across the United States.
Synopsis
The Expanding Legal Services Initiative intends to expand legal representation available to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking by funding organizations with a history of providing direct services to victims of these crimes, but that do not currently offer in-house legal representation for victims. The initial ELSI award includes a planning phase during which recipients engage in ongoing training and technical assistance to set up a legal department in the organization. Continuation funds support the direct legal services provided by the legal department established during the planning phase.
