About this opportunity

The Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women is soliciting reimbursement applications from federally recognized Tribal governments for expenses incurred exercising Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction over non-Indians who commit covered crimes, with applications due July 24, 2026 via Grants.gov (or July 27, 2026 via JustGrants). Eligibility is restricted to federally recognized Tribal governments exercising STCJ as defined under 25 U.S.C. § 1304, plus up to five Alaska Native Villages annually under a DOJ pilot program. Each eligible Tribe receives a maximum allowable reimbursement of up to 25 percent of annual program funding, with opportunity to apply for a waiver of that cap in a separate cycle. Reimbursable expenses include investigation, arrest, and prosecution of covered crimes (including sexual assault forensic processing), detention and supervision of defendants, indigent defense services, and incarceration or treatment and reentry services for persons charged with covered crimes. Covered crimes encompass assault of Tribal justice personnel, child violence, dating violence, domestic violence, obstruction of justice, sexual violence, sex trafficking, stalking, and protection order violations in Indian country. Prior awards in this program ranged from $13,592 to $83,973 per tribe in the initial distribution; FY 2024 funding available to the program was approximately $3.7 million. Award notification occurs within 90 days of the application deadline, followed by online award acceptance by the applicant's Authorized Representative. Applicants must submit through both Grants.gov and JustGrants. The program operates under 28 CFR Part 90, Subpart C and DOJ Financial Grants Management Guide requirements. CFDA 16.059.
