About this opportunity
The Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Victims of Crime is soliciting applications for FY 2026 VOCA Victim Compensation Formula Grants, with applications due July 8, 2026. Eligible applicants are state governments operating victim compensation programs. This is a formula grant; each eligible state receives an award equal to 75 percent of the amount the program awarded in state-funded victim compensation payments during the fiscal year two years prior, excluding property damage compensation. No cost share is required.
Funds support crime victim compensation, including medical and dental care, mental health counseling, funeral and burial expenses, lost wages and income, dependent care costs, and relocation expenses. Compensation funds may be carried forward for obligation by the grantee for three years subsequent to the fiscal year of award.
Award amounts range from $10,000 to approximately $39.6 million, with the majority of awards in the $1 million to $10 million range. The period of performance for FY 2026 awards is October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2029. Awards are administered by the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Victims of Crime division and distributed to state government victim compensation programs. All final award decisions are made by the Assistant Attorney General. The Authorized Representative must accept or decline the award within 45 days of notification.
Application review includes eligibility and responsiveness, merit, programmatic, budget, and risk reviews per Office of Justice Programs procedures. Applicants must submit via JustGrants or grants.gov. The program encourages applicants to advance equity and civil rights objectives and to include American Indian and Alaska Native tribes in program planning and funding allocation decisions. CFDA 16.576.
