About this opportunity

The National Institute of Mental Health seeks applications for pilot research to adapt, optimize, and test behavioral interventions addressing common sleep problems in adolescents and young adults with or at risk for mental health disorders, with applications due October 22, 2026. The R34 activity code supports pilot clinical trials designed to evaluate feasibility, tolerability, acceptability, safety, and potential effectiveness in real-world settings rather than academic laboratories.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments, independent school districts, housing authorities, and special district governments. Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.

NIMH intends to commit $1.5 million in FY 2027 to fund up to 6 awards. Direct costs are limited to $450,000 over the entire project period, with a maximum of $225,000 per year. The maximum project period is 3 years.

Applications must conduct clinical trials in community practice settings and include both sleep and mental health outcome measurements, preliminary assessment of target engagement mechanisms linking sleep to mental health outcomes, and evaluation of how intervention-induced changes in mechanisms relate to clinical benefits. Assessments of suicidal behavior must be included where feasible. All applications require grounding in developmental science, a data management and sharing plan with submission to the National Institute of Mental Health Data Archive, and compliance with ClinicalTrials.gov registration.

Priority consideration is given to interdisciplinary collaborative teams from mental health, sleep medicine, developmental science, clinical trials research methods, behavioral economics, implementation science, data science, and human-computer interaction. Applications incorporating youth advisory panels and community stakeholder engagement receive priority.

Assistance Listing / CFDA number is 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants). Applicants must complete required registrations (SAM, eRA Commons, Grants.gov) prior to submission and follow NIH Application Guide instructions for R34 planning grants.

Synopsis

NIMH seeks applications for pilot research to adapt, optimize, and test behavioral interventions that address common sleep problems in adolescents and young adults with or at risk for a mental health disorder. This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) supports pilot clinical trials designed to evaluate the feasibility, tolerability, acceptability, safety, and potential effectiveness of the approach in real world settings. Applications should aim to conduct a preliminary test of the intervention's impact on sleep and mental health outcomes, as well as an examination of the mechanisms that underlie the intervention's effectiveness, and to obtain preliminary data needed as a prerequisite for larger-scale effectiveness trials. In addition, interdisciplinary, collaborative teams of investigators from the fields of mental health, sleep medicine, developmental science, clinical trials research methods, behavioral economics, implementation science, data science, and human computer interaction are encouraged.

Eligibility

Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/International Collaborations:Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
