About this opportunity
The Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) is seeking applications to fund training programs for interpreters serving individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and individuals who are DeafBlind. The program aims to increase the number of qualified interpreters and enhance their skills in manual, tactile, oral, and cued speech interpretation to support individuals receiving vocational rehabilitation services and other services under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Applicants must demonstrate that training projects were developed in consultation with State Vocational Rehabilitation agencies, consumers, and related organizations; that curricula incorporate evidence-based practices; and that there are established working relationships with state VR agencies and opportunities for consumer input. The evaluation criteria emphasize the appropriateness of training for target consumers and agencies, geographical distribution of projects nationwide, and the strength of partnerships with state vocational rehabilitation systems. Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov by 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time on May 26, 2026, with an absolute priority designated for Interpreter Training programs and an invitational priority for initiatives serving Older Individuals with Disabilities.
Award amounts typically range from approximately $1.5 million to $4.5 million, with project durations spanning four to five years. Successful applicants can expect a peer review process lasting approximately 120 to 160 days before award decisions are made. Projects may be performed by universities, nonprofit organizations, tribal governments, public and private higher education institutions, state and local government entities, and independent school districts throughout the United States. Renewals are available only through the new application process, with continuation based on availability of appropriated funds and demonstrated satisfactory performance through annual reviews.
