About this opportunity
The U.S. Department of Education is soliciting applications for the Centers Aligned with Areas for National Need (CAANN) Program by July 7, 2026, offering approximately $70 million in grants to institutions of higher education or consortia of IHEs. Applicants may pursue either a Comprehensive Center (graduate, professional, and undergraduate instruction) or an Undergraduate Center (undergraduate level only) designation.
Eligible applicants are IHEs or consortia thereof. The program requires applicants to address four Absolute Priorities and may earn up to 20 additional competitive preference points. The indirect cost rate is capped at 8 percent of modified total direct costs.
The estimated award range is $1.2 million to $1.4 million per center for a 48-month project period, with approximately 50 awards anticipated. Applicants must teach languages of strategic importance to U.S. national security and economic prosperity—including Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Czech, Arabic, Swahili, Hausa, Hindi, Urdu, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Farsi, Bahasa, Thai, and other languages—and provide instruction in fields offering understanding of regions in which those languages are used (Latin America, Europe, Eurasia, Middle East, Africa, and Asia). The program also funds research and training in international studies and the international and foreign language aspects of professional fields.
Evaluation is scored on a maximum of 125 points based on project need, significance, quality of design, adequacy of resources, quality of management plan, and quality of project evaluation. Applicants must comply with 2025 Common Instructions for Applicants to Department of Education Discretionary Grant Programs and submit a project narrative (limited to 65 pages), budget narrative, abstract, curriculum vitae of key personnel, course lists, and letters of support. Consortium applicants must include consortium agreements.
The Assistance Listing Number is 84.015C.
