About this opportunity

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) Global is seeking innovative, potentially game-changing research proposals for its Global-X Challenge 2024. This grant opportunity focuses on three key technology areas: subsea object detection and identification, personal expeditionary power and energy, and high latitude high bandwidth communications. Eligible applicants include international teams with at least two entities outside the U.S., such as academia, non-profits, and industry. Proposals will be evaluated on their potential to deliver revolutionary capabilities that could benefit the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, commercial markets, and the public. Key deadlines include white paper submissions by April 3, 2024 and full proposals by June 3, 2024.

ONR Global expects to award up to $750,000 per grant for an initial 9-month period of performance, with an optional additional $250,000 for a follow-on 9-month research effort. This funding will be provided under the Basic and Applied Scientific Research program (CFDA 12.300) administered by the Department of the Navy. The grants aim to accelerate the maturity of promising early-stage concepts to enable future technology development and delivery.

Synopsis

The purpose of this Global-X Challenge is to discover, and ultimately provide a catalyst through a research grant, for subsequent development and delivery of revolutionary capability to the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, the commercial marketplace, and the public. The expected outcomes of this Global-X Challenge are promising, potentially game-changing, concepts whose technology maturity may be accelerated under separate follow-on technology development efforts.
