About this opportunity

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) is soliciting competitive grants through the School-Based Mental Health Services (SBMH) Grant Program to increase the number of credentialed school-based mental health services providers in high-need local educational agencies (LEAs). Eligible applicants include state educational agencies (SEAs), local educational agencies, and consortia of LEAs, with the primary objective of expanding mental health service delivery to students. The program seeks proposals that demonstrate strategies for recruiting and retaining school psychologists, with a focus on early intervention and intensive mental health services. Evaluation criteria will likely include the project's need, significance, design quality, resource adequacy, management plan, and overall service quality. The application deadline is October 29, 2025, at 11:59:59 pm ET, with a specific focus on addressing mental health professional shortages in educational settings.

The grant opportunity includes total funding of $180,000,000 for fiscal year 2025, with estimated individual awards ranging from $1,250,000 to $1,750,000 (averaging $1,500,000). The program anticipates supporting 25-35 total grants over a 48-month project period, with a particular emphasis on serving rural and high-need communities. Absolute and competitive preference priorities will be given to proposals that effectively increase the number of school psychologists, including strategies for respecializing existing professionals. Funds will be available starting September 29, 2025, with the project implementation expected to occur across various educational agencies nationwide.
