About this opportunity
The Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) is seeking competitive grant applications for the Mental Health Service Professional (MHSP) Demonstration Grant Program to address the shortage of credentialed school-based mental health services providers, specifically school psychologists, in high-need local educational agencies (LEAs). The program aims to enhance State Educational Agencies' (SEAs) efforts to combat mental health professional shortages, expand LEAs' capacity to address these gaps, and increase the number of credentialed school psychologists delivering early and intensive mental health services. Eligible applicants must propose a school-based mental health partnership designed to train and place school psychology graduate candidates into participating high-need LEAs. Evaluation criteria will include assessment of project need, design quality, resource adequacy, and management plan effectiveness. The application deadline is October 29, 2025, at 11:59:59 pm ET, with a noted court order confirming the original submission timeline.
The grant program will award approximately $90,000,000 in total funding, with individual grants ranging from $750,000 to $1,250,000. An estimated 18-24 awards are anticipated for a 48-month project period, targeting high-need educational agencies across the United States. The grants will support the development of comprehensive mental health service professional training programs, with a focus on placing graduate candidates in underserved LEAs to address critical mental health service gaps. Funding is contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of federal resources, with the Department of Education making final decisions on application approvals following a competitive peer review process.
