About this opportunity

The National Science Foundation seeks applicants for OCE Education, which funds ocean research and education integration through two main program areas with annual deadlines: Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program (August deadline) and Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) (July deadline).

Eligible applicants are unrestricted. Universities and marine laboratories may propose REU Sites to offer summer internships in ocean-related research to undergraduate students. Pre-tenure researchers may propose under CAREER to combine research with educational programming.

The Ocean Education program also serves as the point of contact for Ocean Technical Education, Research Experiences for Teachers (RET), Geoscience Veterans Education and Training Supplements (GEO-VETS), and REU supplements. RET, GEO-VETS, and REU supplements are funded through OCE science programs and operate under no application deadlines.

OCE Education operates under CFDA 47.050 (Geosciences). The broader Geosciences program has obligated $2.27 billion across 2,527 awards through the Division of Ocean Sciences since 1991, with typical awards ranging from $24 thousand to $775 thousand. Recent activity reflects 182 awards in 2026 through October, representing a moderation from historical volumes. Project Grants dominate the portfolio at 97 percent of awards, with Cooperative Agreements comprising the remaining 3 percent.

Applicants must comply with NSF submission requirements, including registration through Research.gov, valid System for Award Management registration, and Unique Entity Identifiers. Project narratives are limited to 15 pages, with a 2-page data management and sharing plan and 1-page mentoring plan where applicable. Budget justifications may not exceed 5 pages.

Synopsis

OCE Education supports efforts to integrate ocean research and education via two main program areas, which are:

1) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program. This program provides funding to Universities and Marine Laboratories that allows them to offer summer internships to undergraduate students who would like to participate in ocean-related research efforts. Proposals may be submitted annually (August deadline).

2) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER). This program supports pre-tenure researchers who would like to combine their research efforts with excellent educational programs. Proposals may be submitted annually (July deadline).

The Ocean Education program is the point of contact for anyone interested in submitting Ocean Technical Education, Research Experiences for Teachers (RET), Geoscience Veterans Education and Training Supplements (GEO-VETS), and Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) supplement requests. RET, GEO-VET, and REU supplements are funded through the OCE science programs and have no application deadlines.
