About this opportunity
The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) is a federal grant opportunity from the Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) that seeks to address the critical shortage of nursing faculty nationwide. The program provides low-interest loans to graduate nursing students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees who commit to becoming nurse educators. In exchange for up to 4 years of full-time employment as a nurse faculty member at an accredited nursing school, graduates can receive up to 85% cancellation of their student loans. The NFLP also encourages Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to serve as preceptors within academic-practice partnerships to expand clinical training opportunities for nursing students.
This NFLP funding opportunity has an anticipated $25.6 million in total funding available through approximately 80 grants of up to $2 million each. Individual student loans cannot exceed $40,000 per academic year. The application deadline is February 24, 2025, for an expected start date of July 1, 2025. Eligible applicants include accredited schools of nursing with advanced nursing education programs, as well as non-profit organizations, state and local governments, and tribal entities.
Synopsis
The NFLP seeks to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty nationwide by providing low interest loans for individuals studying to be nurse faculty and loan cancellation for those who then go on to work as faculty. Successful applicants must establish, operate, and maintain a student loan program that provides loans to students enrolled in advanced nursing education degree programs. NFLP recipients must also monitor compliance with program requirements. NFLP graduates can have up to 85 percent of their student loan, including interest, canceled if they work full-time as nurse faculty for up to four years at an accredited nursing school. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) who work full-time as preceptors in academic-practice partnerships are also considered faculty under the NFLP, expanding clinical training for nursing students.
