About this opportunity
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity to solicit R01 grant applications for research developing or incorporating novel study designs, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and adaptive designs to discover individual-level health and function profiles and enable personalized prevention plans and interventions for cognitive and brain health in older adults. Applications are not being solicited at this time; this is a forecast announcement to allow potential applicants time to develop collaborations and responsive projects.
Eligible applicants include independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), for-profit organizations, higher education institutions (private and public), county and city/township governments, special district governments, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, state governments, and other eligible entities. Eligible applicants also include federally recognized tribal governments, Indian/Native American tribal governments other than federally recognized, eligible federal agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, and non-domestic entities.
Research scope spans both basic research in animal models and development of human profiles, with levels of analysis ranging from cellular to societal. The initiative will operate under Assistance Listing 93.866 (Aging Research), the parent program under which NIA funds biomedical, social, and behavioral research directed toward understanding aging processes and diseases associated with aging. Standard NIH review timelines of six to nine months apply from application to funding decision. Grant awards typically support project periods not to exceed five years. Major evaluation criteria include scientific merit, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility adequacy, budget justification, and relevance to announced program objectives.
Forecast synopsis
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications that develop or incorporate novel, cutting-edge study designs/methods/analytic approaches through the use of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and adaptive designs to allow the discovery of health/function profiles at the level of the individual and that could lead to the implementation of personalized prevention plans/interventions for cognitive/brain health in older adults. The initiative would allow for both basic research in animal models, as well as the development of profiles for humans, which would span levels of analysis from cellular to societal.
Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO will utilize the R01 activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of aging research are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO.
