About this opportunity

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory intends to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) titled "Undocumented Orphaned Well Research and Development". The objective is to solicit cost-shared research and development proposals focused on three key areas: 1) characterization techniques for undocumented orphaned wells that do not require wellbore entry, 2) advanced sensors and monitoring for methane emissions from these wells and associated infrastructure, and 3) new materials and methods for efficient and cost-effective permanent plugging and abandonment. The FOA will be competitively awarded, with potential applicants unrestricted. While no application deadline or other details are available yet, the Department plans to provide that information if and when the FOA is officially issued.

Successful projects under this FOA are expected to advance disruptive technologies for the characterization, mitigation, and remediation of undocumented orphaned wells in order to permanently eliminate hydrocarbon leakage. Funding will likely range from smaller research and development awards to larger-scale demonstrations, with projects to be performed at various well sites and research facilities across the United States.

Synopsis

Notice of Intent to Issue Funding Opportunity Announcement No. DE-FOA-0003343 entitled Undocumented Orphaned Well Research and Development. This Notice of Intent to Issue is for informational purposes only; the Department of Energy is not seeking comments on the information in this notice and applications are not being accepted at this time. Any information contained in this notice is subject to change. The objective of this FOA is to competitively solicit cost-shared research and development (R & D) proposals to enhance technologies and processes for effective characterization of undocumented orphaned wells (UOWs); improve advanced sensors for the measurement, estimation, and tracking of methane emissions from these wells and their associated infrastructure; and support the development of new characterization concepts and advanced materials for more efficient and cost-effective permanent plugging and abandonment (P & A) of such wells.
