About this opportunity
The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is seeking industry-led partnerships to prototype and pilot innovative processing technologies for critical minerals and materials (CMM). The Critical Minerals and Materials Accelerator program aims to advance mid-stage innovations in four key areas: rare earth magnet supply chain processes, semiconductor material refinement, direct lithium extraction technologies, and critical material separation technologies. Successful applicants will receive support through validation, benchmarking, access to national lab test beds, industry-relevant environment testing, technoeconomic analysis, and life-cycle assessment. The program's primary objective is to develop CMM technologies that can potentially be domestically commercialized within 3-7 years, supporting U.S. energy dominance, national security, and industrial competitiveness. Proposals will be evaluated based on merit review, program policy factors, and availability of funds, with the full Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) expected to be released on the EERE eXCHANGE platform around October 2025, with a proposal due date of October 13, 2025.
The anticipated funding opportunity will make up to $50 million available through multiple cooperative agreements, with individual project performance periods ranging from 1-4 years. These awards will be made under the Conservation Research and Development Federal Grant Program (CFDA 81.086), focusing on advancing energy efficiency and decarbonization technologies. Applicants must complete a multi-step registration process involving Login.gov, SAM.gov, eXCHANGE, FedConnect, and Grants.gov, which can take several weeks to complete. The place of performance will likely include recipient facilities, national laboratories, and industry test sites across the United States. Interested parties should carefully review the full NOFO when released and ensure they meet all registration and application requirements.
Synopsis
Critical minerals and materials (CMM) are the building blocks for technologies foundational to U.S. energy dominance, national security, and industrial competitiveness. To build a secure domestic supply of CMMs, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aims to support industry-led partnerships to prototype and pilot innovative processing technologies that are currently only proven at the bench scale so to address CMM challenges in high impact areas. The CMM Accelerator program will advance these mid-stage innovations through validation, benchmarking, access to national lab test beds, testing in industry relevant environments, technoeconomic analysis, and life-cycle assessment. The program establishes a pipeline to support technology maturation to ultimately unlock private capital investments.
