About this opportunity

The Department of Energy's (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory is issuing a Notice of Intent for a forthcoming Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) titled "Accelerating CO2 Conversion Technology Development and Deployment - Biological, Catalytic, and Mineralization Pathways." The NOFO, if issued, will solicit cost-shared research and development proposals to advance the piloting of carbon conversion technologies with high technology readiness levels (TRL>5) capable of achieving significant carbon mitigation through biological, catalytic, or mineralization pathways. The objectives include addressing scaling challenges, improving the economics of commercial projects, enhancing the durability of novel unit operations, and overcoming barriers to consumer adoption. The NOFO is expected to focus on four main areas: (1) Biological - algal and non-photosynthetic routes, (2) Catalytic - thermochemical and electrocatalytic processes, (3) Mineralization - synthetic aggregates, alternative concrete/masonry binders, and point source/process integration, and (4) Testing and lifecycle analysis development required for commercialization. The NOFO is anticipated to be issued in 2025 with a proposal due date of January 17, 2025.

The anticipated funding for this opportunity will come from the DOE's Fossil Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.089), which supports a wide range of projects aimed at minimizing the environmental impacts of fossil fuels. Recent awards under this program have ranged from approximately $250,000 to over $100 million, with project periods typically between 1-5 years. Projects are expected to be performed at locations across the United States, including research facilities, pilot plants, industrial sites, and field demonstrations.

Synopsis

The Notice of Intent is for informational purposes only and DOE is not seeking comments on the information contained in the notice. This is a Notice of Intent to Issue Notice of Funding Opportunity DE-FOA-0003495 titled Accelerating CO2 Conversion Technology Development and Deployment - Biological, Catalytic, and Mineralization Pathways. The objective of this Notice of Funding Opportunity is to competitively solicit cost-shared research and development proposals to advance the piloting of carbon conversion technologies of with high technology readiness level (TRL>5) capable of achieving significant carbon mitigation via biological, catalytic, or mineralization pathways.
