About this opportunity

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ), under the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, seeks applications for rigorous applied research on the intersection of drug crimes and firearms to inform evidence-based tools, practices, and policies for state, tribal, and local law enforcement and criminal justice stakeholders. This cooperative agreement opportunity addresses four topic areas: Pattern Identification, Interdiction & Disruption Strategies, Prosecution, and Drug Market Dynamics. Applicants must develop research that directly informs the development of actionable knowledge applicable to justice system practitioners addressing drug trafficking, drug markets, and drug-related violence. The evaluation process will include eligibility and responsiveness, merit, programmatic, budget, and risk reviews, with final award decisions made by the Assistant Attorney General. The application deadline is June 8, 2026, with the funding opportunity posted on May 4, 2026.

Award values under the parent National Institute of Justice Research, Evaluation, and Development Project Grants program (CFDA 16.560) have historically ranged from approximately $25,000 to $2.1 million, with project periods typically spanning one to five years. Research and evaluation activities will be performed at recipient facilities and research sites, frequently in partnership with state and local criminal justice agencies across diverse geographic regions. All successful applicants must maintain records for three years following submission of the final expenditure report and comply with uniform administrative requirements and audit standards established in 2 CFR 200. Eligible applicants include state and county governments, city/township governments, tribal governments and organizations, higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, and other specified entities.
