About this opportunity

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the Dual Degree Dentist Scientist Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00 Clinical Trial Not Allowed), with an application due date of May 7, 2028. This career development award supports exceptional dual degree dentist scientists (holding degrees such as DMD/DDS + PhD) in transitioning from mentored postdoctoral research to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions in dental, oral, and craniofacial health. Applications are not currently being solicited; this notice allows potential applicants time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The program provides two years of mentored K99 training followed by three to five years of independent R00 research support. An optional fifth year of R00 support accommodates clinical specialty training at no more than 3 person-months effort (25% full-time professional effort) annually. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, small businesses, and other entity types. Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible; foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are allowed.

The opportunity operates under CFDA 93.121 (Oral Diseases and Disorders Research). Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and significance, investigator competency, innovation and novelty, technical adequacy of experimental design, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to NIDCR program objectives. Standard NIH evaluation procedures apply: primary review by an initial review group of extramural peer scientists, secondary review by the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council.

Synopsis

The purpose of the NIDCR Dual Degree Dentist Scientist Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) program is to develop and maintain a strong cohort of independently funded dentist scientists dedicated to improving dental, oral and craniofacial health. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding dual degree dentist scientists from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions by providing support for two years of mentored training and three to five years of independent research. An option for five years of independent (R00) support is available to accommodate clinical training in a dental specialty program at no more than 3 person-months effort (25% full-time professional effort) in any year of the R00 phase.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Regional Organizations; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
