About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the NIDCR Dentist Scientist Career Transition Award for Intramural Investigators (K22 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) with an application due date of January 7, 2028. This award facilitates the transition of highly qualified dentists from NIH Intramural postdoctoral research positions to extramural academic tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions at eligible institutions.

Eligible applicants include county and city governments, state governments, higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal governments (federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit organizations, and special district governments. The program also welcomes Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, and tribally controlled colleges and universities. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are ineligible, though foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are permitted.

The award provides two years of mentored postdoctoral research training support in the NIH Intramural Research Program followed by three years of independent research funding at the extramural institution. Clinical trials are not permitted under this mechanism.

Applications are reviewed by an initial review group of extramural peer scientists, with secondary review by the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council. Review criteria include scientific merit and significance, investigator competency, innovation and novelty, technical adequacy of experimental design, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity in relation to proposed work, and relevance to NIDCR program objectives. Protections for human subjects, inclusion of women and minorities, and vertebrate animal welfare are evaluated but not scored.

The award is funded under CFDA 93.121 (Oral Diseases and Disorders Research).
