About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is soliciting applications for the Career Transition Award (K22) program to support postdoctoral fellows' transition to assistant professor or equivalent positions and initiate careers as independent research scientists, with applications due January 7, 2028. The program explicitly prohibits independent clinical trials.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, special district governments, public or Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, faith-based or community-based organizations, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, regional organizations, and eligible federal agencies. Non-domestic entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are ineligible.

The program operates under CFDA 93.855 (Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research). Applicants must submit Career Development-specific forms in addition to general application instructions; the application guide identifies which forms are required. The funding mechanism is a grant supporting biomedical research and research training in infectious diseases and related areas, including developmental research.

Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and significance of proposed objectives, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity relative to project scope, and relevance to program objectives. All applications undergo peer review by an appropriate initial review group and national advisory council before award decisions are made.
