About this opportunity

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications using NHLBI-funded TransOmics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program data to generate integrated genetic and multi-omics data for discovery of molecular mechanisms in Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep (HLBS) disorders, with applications due May 8, 2028. No direct funding will be provided; applicants generate data deposited in public controlled-access databases (dbGaP and NHLBI BioData Catalyst).

Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), small businesses, and other eligible entity categories including HBCUs, TCCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, and non-domestic entities.

The program aims to advance TOPMed from genetic mapping to mechanistic understanding of how genetic factors drive HLBS disease at molecular and cellular levels, incorporating AI and machine learning tool sets where applicable to accelerate functional genomics research and personalized medicine. Applications are not currently being solicited; this forecast allows potential applicants time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects before formal solicitation.

The NOFO will use the X01 activity code and fall under Assistance Listings 93.837 (Cardiovascular Diseases Research), 93.838 (Lung Diseases Research), and 93.840 (Translation and Implementation Science Research for Heart, Lung, Blood Diseases, and Sleep Disorders). Authorized under Sections 301 and 405 of the Public Health Service Act and 42 CFR Part 52 and 2 CFR Part 200.

Synopsis

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications to use NHLBI-funded TransOmics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program to generate a large volume of integrated genetic and multi-omics data to facilitate discovery of the molecular mechanisms of Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep (HLBS) disorders. No funding will be provided under this NOFO. The genomic data and related phenotypic data will be deposited in a public NIH-designated controlled-access database such as the database for Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP) and NHLBIs BioData Catalyst (BDC). The overall goal is to move from simply cataloguing genetic associations to understanding how genetic factors contribute to HLBS diseases at the molecular and cellular levels. This transformation will help move TOPMed from genetic Map to Mechanism with potential applications of AI and ML tool sets where possible, enabling functional genomics research that will accelerate mechanistic personalized medicine

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
