About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the NHLBI Career Transition Award for Intramural Postdoctoral Fellows and Research Trainees (K22 Clinical Trial Required) with an application deadline of July 12, 2027. Applicants must be highly qualified postdoctoral fellows currently in the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research; transition to an extramural institution is not automatic and requires approval based on documented research success during the mentored intramural phase.

Eligible applicant types include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), state and local governments, small businesses, tribal organizations and governments, independent school districts, and other entity types. The program explicitly excludes non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations. Eligible institutions also include Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, and U.S. territories.

The award structure spans five years total: an intramural mentored phase of up to two years followed by an extramural phase of three years. Transition between phases is conditional on successful performance review by NHLBI, including evaluation of the research plan for execution at the extramural institution. The program supports research aligned with NHLBI priorities including lung diseases, cardiovascular diseases, blood diseases, sleep disorders, and translation and implementation science. The award is associated with CFDA numbers 93.838 (Lung Diseases Research), 93.837 (Cardiovascular Diseases Research), 93.840 (Translation and Implementation Science), 93.839 (Blood Diseases and Resources Research), and 93.233 (National Center on Sleep Disorders Research).

Synopsis

The purpose of the NHLBI Career Transition Award (K22) program is to provide highly qualified postdoctoral fellows in the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research the opportunity to transition their research programs as new investigators to extramural institutions. To achieve these objectives, the NHLBI Career Transition Award will support two phases of research: a mentored intramural phase (up to two years) and an extramural phase (three years), for a total of five years of combined support. Transition from the intramural phase of support to the extramural phase is not automatic. Approval of the transition will be based on the success of the awardee's research program during the mentored phase as determined by an NHLBI progress review, which will include an evaluation of a research plan to be carried out at the extramural institution.
