About this opportunity

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is soliciting research applications to advance next-generation glucose control technologies for type 1 diabetes management. The R01 funding opportunity targets research addressing barriers to effective open- and closed-loop diabetes control systems, including innovations in sensing analytes and physiologic signals, novel hormone formulations and delivery mechanisms, artificial intelligence and machine learning-driven tools and algorithms, and digital twin modeling to improve glycemic control and reduce disease burden. Applicants must demonstrate scientific merit, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequate facilities and resources, appropriate budget justification, and relevance to program objectives. The agency encourages multidisciplinary collaborative teams combining expertise in endocrine physiology, behavioral science, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins, precision medicine, device design, and clinical testing. The application deadline is June 17, 2026, with scientific merit review anticipated in November 2026, advisory council review in January 2027, and an earliest project start date of April 2027. Pre-application consultation with NIDDK staff (NIDDK_DEM@nih.gov) is strongly recommended to ensure project responsiveness.

The NIDDK intends to commit $3 million in FY2027 funding to support 3-5 R01 research project grants with individual award budgets limited to $500,000 in direct costs per year and maximum project periods of five years. All eligible organization types are welcome to apply, including higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, and government entities, though foreign subawards and subcontracts are prohibited. Research activities are expected to be performed at recipient organization facilities across the United States, with clinical trials optional but encouraged, particularly those incorporating innovative designs such as platform trials, adaptive designs, and decentralized trial elements. All applicants must comply with standard NIH requirements including registration in SAM, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov, submission of a Data Management and Sharing Plan, and adherence to federal cybersecurity and compliance standards.

Synopsis

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support research addressing barriers that limit progress toward more effective open- and closed-loop diabetes control systems. This may include research that addresses: 1) innovation of sensing relevant analytes/physiologic signals; 2) novel formulation and delivery of hormones; 3) artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML)-driven tools/algorithms; and 4) digital twin modeling to augment decision support and automated control systems with the goal of improving glycemic control, reducing burden of care, and enhancing quality of life of people with T1D].This NOFO is associated with the Special Diabetes Program (https://www.niddk.nih.gov/about-niddk/research-areas/diabetes/type-1-diabetes-special-statutory-funding-program/about-special-diabetes-program) which funds research on the prevention, treatment, and cure of type 1 diabetes and its complications, including unique, innovative, and collaborative research consortia and clinical trials networks
