About this opportunity
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture at the Department of Agriculture is soliciting applications for the New Beginning for Tribal Students program to increase retention and graduation rates of Tribal students at 1862, 1890, and 1994 land-grant institutions, with an application deadline of July 2, 2026.
Eligible applicants are land-grant colleges and universities only. Applicants must provide 100 percent matching contributions on a dollar-for-dollar basis from non-Federal sources. The program will distribute approximately $5 million across approximately 10 awards, with individual grants ranging from $250,000 to $500,000 depending on project type. Standard Grants support single institutions at up to $250,000 over 24–48 months, while Collaborative Grant Type 1 projects support one collaborating partner (such as a Tribal college, high school, or community college) at up to $500,000. Project periods, including no-cost extensions, may not exceed three years. Indirect costs are capped at 30 percent of total Federal funds awarded.
Funded activities include recruiting; tuition and related fees; experiential learning; student services such as tutoring, counseling, and academic advising; dual credit programs; and articulation agreements. Proposals must include a Data Management Plan, letters of commitment from collaborating partners for collaborative applications, and a leadership development component. The program prioritizes innovative agricultural technologies including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, and robotics.
NIFA conducts a two-stage review: administrative screening followed by peer review using five equally weighted evaluation criteria addressing graduation rate potential, proposed approach and cooperative linkages, institutional capability, key personnel qualifications, and budget cost-effectiveness.
