About this opportunity

The National Cancer Institute is soliciting applications for NCORP Academic Community Sites, a cooperative agreement mechanism to establish consortia led by academic medical centers with networks of community hospitals and oncology practices, with applications due by September 18, 2026. Clinical trials are not allowed under this component, distinguishing it from parallel NCORP Research Bases; applicants must meet or exceed 70 new unique patient accruals annually, evenly distributed between cancer control, prevention, and screening trials and treatment and imaging trials.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (including 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal organizations (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), small businesses, and special district governments. Non-domestic entities and foreign components are ineligible. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and military treatment facilities are ineligible, as are institutions affiliated with NCTN Lead Academic Participating Sites.

The National Cancer Institute intends to commit $73 million in FY 2027 for up to 50 awards combined across Community and Academic Community Sites. Individual awards are structured as cooperative agreements with a 6-year project period and an earliest start date of September 18, 2026. Budget calculations are based on per-patient accrual rates ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 depending on trial type and site performance category, plus 10–30 percent coordination overhead. Travel costs for attendance at up to four Research Base meetings and the annual NCORP meeting must be included in budgets.

Academic Community Sites proposing cancer care delivery research must maintain at least three active care delivery protocols annually. Applications undergo NIH peer review with scientific merit scoring on significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and environment, followed by National Cancer Advisory Board review considering geographic distribution and program relevance. The activity code is UG1 (Clinical Research Cooperative Agreements - Single Project). Assistance Listing numbers are 93.393 (Cancer Cause and Prevention Research), 93.395 (Cancer Treatment Research), and 93.399 (Cancer Control).

Synopsis

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is one of three NOFOs for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). NCORP is designed to enhance generalizability and dissemination of clinical trial and other human subject research study results through accrual in a variety of community settings. The purpose of NCORP is to engage cancer patient populations, those at risk of cancer, and organizations in rigorous studies focused on cancer control, prevention, treatment and care delivery.NCORP is a community-based research network that:Designs and conducts clinical trials and other human subject studies for adults and children in cancer control, prevention, screening, and care delivery, as well as quality-of-life studies embedded within treatment trials;Enhances patient and provider access to treatment and imaging trials conducted under the National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN);NCORP will support the following components that will be individually awarded through the respective Request for Applications (RFAs) indicated below:NCORP Research Bases (UG1 Clinical Trials Required);NCORP Community Sites (UG1 Clinical Trials Not Allowed); andNCORP Academic Community Sites (UG1 Clinical Trials Not Allowed)(covered by this NOFO)NCORP Academic Community Sites are a consortium led by an academic center with a network of community hospitals and/or oncology practices, public hospitals, and/ or other healthcare centers that serve a patient population that can enhance the representativeness of participants accrued to cancer control, prevention, treatment and care delivery clinical trials and other human subjects research.
