About this opportunity

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is soliciting applications for the Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services program, with applications due by 11:59 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time on November 13, 2026. Eligibility is restricted to Federally Recognized Indian Tribes (including Alaska Native Villages) and nonprofit organizations that primarily serve and represent Native Hawaiians as defined in 20 U.S.C. 7517. Cost share is voluntary and not required.

IMLS anticipates awarding approximately $3,772,000 across 20 awards, with individual awards ranging from $5,000 to $250,000 (average $200,000). Projects must run one to three years, with start dates of August 1, 2027, and conclusion by July 31, 2030.

The program builds organizational capacity through three selectable objectives: preservation and perpetuation of languages and cultural practices; professional development of the museum workforce; or management and care of museum collections and documentation. Eligible activities include educational programming, language revitalization and documentation, oral history capture, digitization, exhibition development, collections management and conservation, repatriation research, institutional planning, and professional training.

Applicants must submit the SF-424S form, IMLS Museum Program Information Form, Organizational Profile (1 page), Narrative (7 pages maximum), annual Schedule of Completion (1 page per year), IMLS Budget Form with justification, List of Key Project Staff (1 page), Key Staff Resumes (2 pages each), and Performance Measurement Plan (2 pages). Proof of nonprofit status and eligibility, indirect cost rate agreements, digital product plans, and conservation reports are conditionally required.

Allowable costs include personnel, travel, materials, adaptive technologies, equipment, program evaluation, training, and indirect costs up to 15 percent of Modified Total Direct Costs for organizations without a negotiated rate. Unallowable costs include fundraising, endowment contributions, general operating support, collection acquisition, promotional advertising, construction, and social activities. Award notifications are anticipated by July 2027. CFDA 45.308.
