About this opportunity

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is seeking applications for the Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services (NANH) program to support projects that sustain indigenous heritage, culture, and knowledge among Federally Recognized Indian Tribes and nonprofit organizations primarily serving Native Hawaiians. Eligible applicants must address one of three program objectives: supporting language and cultural practice preservation, supporting workforce professional development, or supporting collections management and care. Projects may encompass educational programming, language preservation, oral history documentation, digital media enhancements, institutional planning, professional training, exhibition development, collections management, digitization, repatriation research, and conservation work. Applications will be evaluated based on project justification, alignment with program goals, quality of the work plan, and potential measurable results that demonstrate societal impact. All applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov by 11:59 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time on March 13, 2026, with successful applicants to be notified by August 2026.

The FY 2026 competition offers $3,772,000 in total funding across approximately 20 awards, with individual grants ranging from $5,000 to $250,000 and an average award of approximately $150,000. Funded projects will run for one to three years, with performance periods beginning September 1, 2026, and concluding August 31, 2029. Cost share is permitted but not required. Projects will be implemented across tribal lands and Native Hawaiian communities throughout the United States, including locations in Alaska, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and various other states with significant Native American populations.
