About this opportunity

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) seeks applicants to establish or continue laboratory participation in the National Human Ear Resource Network, a cooperative agreement funding collaborative research infrastructure supporting auditory and vestibular researchers, with applications due November 1, 2027. Clinical trials are not allowed. NIDCD will commit $3.6 million in FY 2028 to fund up to 6 awards.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits with and without 501(c)(3) status, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), faith-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and U.S. territories or possessions. Foreign organizations and foreign subawards are ineligible.

Individual awards are capped at $450,000 direct costs per year, with an optional additional $150,000 for a single subaward dedicated to processing human temporal bones. The maximum project period is 5 years. Applicants must attend one in-person Network meeting per year; travel costs are required.

Network laboratories must share human temporal bone and surgical tissue samples, develop and disseminate techniques for tissue preservation and processing, provide technical instruction in ear tissue preparation, upload digitized temporal bone images and data to NIDCD-approved databases (EarBase and gEAR), and curate donor medical records. All applicants must complete a Data Management and Sharing Plan and comply with required registrations including SAM, eRA Commons, Grants.gov, and ORCID ID.

Awards are based on significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and institutional environment, with substantial ongoing involvement from NIDCD scientific and program staff. Scientific merit review occurs in July 2027, advisory council review in October 2027, with awards anticipated in December 2027. The earliest start date is March 5, 2027. The opportunity is assigned to Assistance Listing 93.173 (Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders).
