About this opportunity
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is seeking new and renewal applications for the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). Through cooperative agreements, the NDNP creates a national digital resource of historically significant newspapers published between 1690 and 1963 from all 56 U.S. states and jurisdictions. The Library of Congress maintains this freely accessible, searchable online database. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, accredited higher education institutions, state/local governments, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. Applications will be evaluated based on the proposed project's history and scope, methodology and standards, dissemination plans, work plan, and staff qualifications. The application deadline is January 10, 2025, with anticipated award announcements in August 2025.
NEH anticipates making approximately 10 awards totaling around $2.5 million, with individual cooperative agreements up to $325,000. The period of performance is two years, starting September 1, 2025. The project supports the NEH's priorities in American Tapestry, United We Stand, and the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, and the resulting digital newspaper content will be made freely available through the Library of Congress.
