About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for National Centers for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NCBIB) grants to fund research and development on new technologies driven by the needs of basic, translational, and clinical researchers, with no hard application deadline specified in this forecast notice. NCBIB centers must make technologies available to other investigators, train members of the research community in technology use, and disseminate technologies broadly.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, small businesses, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), state and local governments, federal agencies, U.S. territories and possessions, faith-based and community-based organizations, and regional organizations. Non-domestic entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible, though foreign components of otherwise eligible U.S. organizations are permitted. Applicant organizations may submit more than one application if each is scientifically distinct; however, NIH will not accept duplicate or substantially overlapping applications under review simultaneously, and renewal applications are restricted to a total center funding period of fifteen years.
NIBIB awards under this mechanism are made under CFDA 93.286 (Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health). Evaluation criteria include significance of the research problem, adequacy of approach, innovation, investigator qualifications, scientific environment, appropriateness of budget and duration, program relevance, adequacy of plans for subject recruitment and protection, and data-sharing plans. Project periods typically do not exceed five years, with awards usually made annually.
