About this opportunity
NASA Headquarters is soliciting applications for the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Phase II program, which funds up to two-year development efforts for visionary concepts, with complete details and application due dates accessible via NSPIRES once the Phase II Appendix posts to the umbrella Space Technology Research, Development, Demonstration, and Infusion - 2026 (SpaceTech-REDDI-2026) solicitation.
Applicant eligibility is unrestricted. Phase II awards advance the most promising Phase I concepts and explore potential infusion options within and beyond NASA, with strategic transition to other NASA programs, other government agencies, or commercial partners as the ultimate objective. NASA awards Project Grants for this work. The program operates as a three-stage pipeline: Phase I awards (typically nine months) explore feasibility and viability of visionary concepts; Phase II awards further develop the most promising Phase I concepts; and Phase III awards strategically advance and transition the most promising Phase II concepts.
Historical NIAC Phase I and Phase II awards have ranged from $50 thousand to $600 thousand per award. The Space Technology program (CFDA 43.012) is administered by NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate and prioritizes advancement of U.S. space technology innovation and competitiveness, technology-driven economic growth within the expanding space economy, and development of the U.S. aerospace technology community. STMD investments align with Moon to Mars Objectives and Science Decadal Surveys through a published Technology Strategy and Civil Space Shortfall Ranking.
Merit review is mandatory for all applications, based on peer review where applicable. Award selection announcements typically occur 150 to 220 days after the proposal due date, following federal budget approval. Applicants must register in NSPIRES to submit proposals and must follow individual solicitation requirements regarding Notices of Intent and submission formatting.
