About this opportunity

The National Science Foundation Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences is soliciting applications for foundational research in chemistry across nine program areas—Chemical Catalysis, Chemical Measurement and Imaging, Chemical Mechanism Function and Properties, Chemical Structure and Dynamics, Chemical Synthesis, Chemical Systems and Solutions, Chemical Theory Models and Computational Methods, Chemistry of Life Processes, and Macromolecular Supramolecular and Nanochemistry—with an application due date of October 7, 2076.

Eligible applicants are Institutions of Higher Education (two- and four-year IHEs accredited and located in the US), non-profit non-academic organizations including independent museums observatories research laboratories and professional societies located in the US and directly associated with educational or research activities, and Tribal Nations as defined by the Federally Recognized Indian Tribe List Act of 1994. Proposals including funding to international branch campuses of US IHEs must justify why project activities cannot be performed at the US campus and explain the benefit to the project of performance at the branch campus.

NSF MPS prioritizes intellectually ambitious and potentially transformative foundational research. Proposals need not promise near-term product deployment commercial outcome or address later-stage development to be competitive. This program operates under CFDA 47.049 (Mathematical and Physical Sciences). The parent program has obligated over $34.57 billion across 78,947 grants historically, with NSF accounting for approximately 96 percent of funding. Individual research project grants typically range from $200,000 to $500,000, though recent awards span $45,000 to $1.26 million depending on project type and scale. All applications must comply with NSF formatting and submission requirements including Data Management and Sharing Plans and, where applicable, Mentoring Plans.

Synopsis

The U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (NSF MPS) supports foundational research through multiple programs in the chemical sciences.

Programs include:

  • Chemical Catalysis

  • Chemical Measurement and Imaging

  • Chemical Mechanism, Function, and Properties

  • Chemical Structure and Dynamics

  • Chemical Synthesis

  • Chemical Systems and Solutions

  • Chemical Theory, Models and Computational Methods

  • Chemistry of Life Processes

  • Macromolecular, Supramolecular, and Nanochemistry

NSF MPS is particularly interested in intellectually ambitious and potentially transformative foundational research. Proposals need not promise a near-term product, deployment, or commercial outcome, nor need they address later-stage development to be competitive.

Eligibility

*Who May Submit Proposals: Proposals may only be submitted by the following: -Non-profit, non-academic organizations: Independent museums, observatories, research laboratories, professional societies and similar organizations located in the U.S. that are directly associated with educational or research activities. -Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs): Two- and four-year IHEs (including community colleges) accredited in, and having a campus located in the US, acting on behalf of their faculty members. Special Instructions for International Branch Campuses of US IHEs: If the proposal includes funding to be provided to an international branch campus of a US institution of higher education (including through use of sub-awards and consultant arrangements), the proposer must explain the benefit(s) to the project of performance at the international branch campus, and justify why the project activities cannot be performed at the US campus. -Tribal Nations: An American Indian or Alaska Native tribe, band, nation, pueblo, village, or community that the Secretary of the Interior acknowledges as a federally recognized tribe pursuant to the Federally Recognized Indian Tribe List Act of 1994, 25 U.S.C. §§ 5130-5131.
