About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is forecasting grants to support the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), which funds domestic organizations developing dual-degree training that combines a clinical degree (M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.D.S., Pharm.D., or equivalent) with a research doctorate (Ph.D.), with no hard deadline specified in this forecast notice.

Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, federally recognized and non-federally recognized tribal organizations and governments, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, eligible federal agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, and faith-based or community-based organizations.

MSTP supports evidence-informed approaches to clinician-scientist training that incorporate didactic, research, mentoring, and career development elements. The program aims to prepare trainees for careers addressing the nation's biomedical research needs by aligning with the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) program goal of ensuring a pool of highly trained scientists in appropriate disciplines.

The program operates under CFDA 93.859 (Biomedical Research and Research Training), administered by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). NIGMS peer reviews all applications for scientific and technical merit and considers portfolio breadth, investigator approach diversity, available support to investigators, research priority alignment with NIGMS mission, early-stage and at-risk investigator status, and whether principal investigators hold multiple NIGMS-funded R01 awards when making funding decisions. NIGMS does not maintain a published payline; applications with strong scores may remain unfunded if investigators possess substantial other support.

Forecast synopsis

The overall goal of the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) program is to help ensure that a pool of highly trained scientists is available in appropriate scientific disciplines to address the Nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs.

In alignment with the goal of the NRSA program, the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) supports the development of well-trained clinician-scientist leaders to address the nation's biomedical research needs. MSTP will support eligible, domestic organizations to develop and implement effective, evidence-informed approaches to dual-degree training and mentoring that will keep pace with the rapid evolution of the biomedical research enterprise and lead to the completion of both a clinical degree (for example, M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.D.S., Pharm.D., etc.) and a research doctorate degree (Ph.D.). MSTP incorporates didactic, research, mentoring, and career development elements to prepare trainees for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the nation.
