About this opportunity
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Lifelong Learning is accepting applications for the Media Projects program, which supports the development, production, and distribution of radio programs, podcasts, and documentary films that engage general audiences with humanities content. Applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, accredited institutions of higher education, state and local governments, or federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. All projects must be grounded in humanities scholarship, involve humanities scholars throughout development and production, employ appropriate media professionals, use accessible formats, and demonstrate potential for broad public appeal. Applications will be evaluated based on established review criteria through a peer review process conducted by subject matter experts, with final funding decisions made by the NEH Chairman. The application deadline is June 25, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, with award announcements anticipated in December 2026.
NEH anticipates awarding approximately $6,000,000 to an estimated 15 recipients through two funding levels: Development awards providing up to $75,000 for film projects only, and Production awards providing up to $350,000 for radio and podcast projects or up to $700,000 for documentary films. The period of performance ranges from six to twelve months for Development awards and one to three years for Production awards, with all projects required to commence between March 1, 2027, and September 1, 2027. No cost sharing or matching funds are required, and projects may be performed at the applicant's location or any appropriate site where the media work will be developed and produced.
