About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health seeks applicants for research grants examining mechanisms through which incretin mimetics (GLP-1, GIP-1, or dual GLP-1/GIP-1 agonists or antagonists) impact cancer risk, with an application due date of January 7, 2027; clinical trials are not permitted under this opportunity.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit organizations, and specialized institutions including HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, AANAPISIs, and tribally controlled colleges and universities. Non-domestic entities and U.S. territories are also eligible.

The funding mechanism is a research grant under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research program (CFDA 93.393). The program aims to promote both preclinical and patient-based studies investigating how incretin mimetics influence cancer risk rather than shorter-term outcomes such as weight loss and diabetes control. Current evidence suggests these agents may increase risk for some obesity-related cancers while decreasing risk for others; the opportunity targets scientists with expertise in understanding the dynamic metabolic and physiological changes these agents cause.

Applications are evaluated on scientific and technical merit, including significance of proposed objectives, adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget justification, and relevance to program objectives. Peer review occurs through scientific review groups and the National Cancer Advisory Board. Awards compete on merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with NCI and NIH priorities.

Synopsis

The goal of the proposed funding announcement is twofold, to promote preclinical and patient based studies examining the mechanism(s) through which incretin mimetics (including agonists or antagonists of GLP-1, GIP-1, or dual GLP-1/GIP-1 agents) impact cancer risk, and to draw talented scientists who understand the dynamic changes caused by these agents to investigate the mechanisms of how these agents influence cancer risk rather than shorter term outcomes such as weight loss and diabetes. The data thus far suggests that these agents may increase the risk of some, while decreasing the risk of other obesity related cancers.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
