About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health seeks applicants for an R01 grant to fund preclinical and patient-based studies examining mechanisms through which incretin mimetics (GLP-1 agonists or antagonists, GIP-1 agonists or antagonists, or dual GLP-1/GIP-1 agents) impact cancer risk, with applications due January 7, 2027.
Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, nonprofits (both 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), city/township governments, special district governments, county governments, independent school districts, and public or Indian housing authorities. The program also welcomes applications from Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, historically Black colleges and universities, tribally controlled colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and non-domestic entities.
The funding announcement aims to draw scientists to investigate long-term mechanistic impacts of incretin mimetics on cancer risk rather than shorter-term outcomes such as weight loss and diabetes. Emerging evidence suggests these agents may increase risk for some obesity-related cancers while decreasing risk for others, making mechanistic understanding a priority.
This opportunity falls under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research program (CFDA 93.393). Applications are evaluated on scientific and technical merit, competency of the investigator, adequacy of experimental design and facilities, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. Typical R01 grants in this program range from $500 thousand to $800 thousand annually. The period of performance follows standard NIH grant cycles, with initial awards supporting the first budget period (usually 12 months).
Synopsis
The goal of the proposed funding announcement is twofold, to promote preclinical and patient based studies examining the mechanism(s) through which incretin mimetics (including agonists or antagonists of GLP-1, GIP-1, or dual GLP-1/GIP-1 agents) impact cancer risk, and to draw talented scientists who understand the dynamic changes caused by these agents to investigate the mechanisms of how these agents influence cancer risk rather than shorter term outcomes such as weight loss and diabetes. The data thus far suggests that these agents may increase the risk of some, while decreasing the risk of other obesity related cancers.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
