About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute is soliciting applications for investigator-initiated research on mechanisms by which bariatric surgery impacts cancer risk, with applications due January 7, 2028. This R21 mechanism explicitly excludes clinical trials.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), county governments, city/township governments, special district governments, independent school districts, and public or Indian housing authorities. Foreign organizations are not eligible; however, foreign components of U.S. organizations are allowed. Other eligible entities include HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, AANAPISISs, TCCUs, faith-based or community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, regional organizations, and U.S. territories or possessions.
The program supports proof-of-concept studies for feasibility and exploratory development. Applicants must demonstrate that proposed feasibility work has not already been developed in the literature or with preliminary data. Unpublished preliminary data are not permitted; however, references and data from widely available preprints with a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) are acceptable. Investigators with unpublished preliminary data should submit proposals to the companion R01 mechanism instead.
Applications are evaluated on scientific merit and general significance, technical adequacy of experimental design and approach, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity relative to project scope, and relevance to program objectives. All competitive applications are peer-reviewed and compete on scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with NCI and NIH priorities. Funding opportunities are assigned to CFDA 93.393 (Cancer Cause and Prevention Research), CFDA 93.399 (Cancer Control), and CFDA 93.396 (Cancer Biology Research).
Synopsis
Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for support of investigator-initiated studies addressing mechanisms by which bariatric surgery impacts cancer risk, and seeks to draw in talented scientists who study bariatric surgery to investigate its effects on cancer, rather than shorter term outcomes such as weight loss and diabetes. The goal of this NOFO is to support proof of concept studies for feasibility and exploratory development. Feasibility must not have already been developed in the literature or with preliminary data. While unpublished data are not permitted, references and data from widely available preprints that have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) are acceptable. Investigators who have generated unpublished preliminary data should submit a proposal to companion R01.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
