About this opportunity

The National Cancer Institute is soliciting investigator-initiated research applications addressing mechanisms by which bariatric surgery impacts cancer risk, with an application due date of January 7, 2028.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), independent school districts, and other entity types. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities are not eligible; however, foreign components of U.S. organizations are permitted. Eligible applicants also include Hispanic-serving institutions, historically black colleges and universities, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, and tribally controlled colleges and universities.

The funding instrument is a grant under the R01 mechanism with clinical trial optional designation. The program falls under three Assistance Listings: Cancer Cause and Prevention Research (93.393), Cancer Control (93.399), and Cancer Biology Research (93.396). Recent awards under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research program (the primary vehicle) range from approximately $281 thousand to $2.5 million, with typical R01 grants in the $500 thousand to $800 thousand annual range.

Applications are evaluated on scientific merit and technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, necessity of budget components, and relevance to program objectives. All competitive applications compete for available funds on the basis of scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with NCI and NIH priorities. Initial award provides funds for the first budget period (typically 12 months), with the Notice of Grant Award indicating support recommended for the remainder of the project period.

Synopsis

Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for support of investigator-initiated studies addressing mechanisms by which bariatric surgery impacts cancer risk, and seeks to draw in talented scientists who study bariatric surgery to investigate its effects on cancer, rather than shorter-term outcomes such as weight loss and diabetes.
