About this opportunity
The National Science Foundation's Marine Geology and Geophysics program supports fundamental research on all aspects of the geology and geophysics of the ocean basins, margins, and the Great Lakes. Key areas of focus include the structure and tectonic evolution of ocean systems, the genesis and chemical evolution of marine sediments, ocean circulation patterns and paleoclimates, and the interactions between continental and marine geologic processes. This opportunity is open to unrestricted applicant types, and the evaluation will be based on the scientific merit, broader impacts, and feasibility of the proposed research. The deadline for this funding opportunity is not provided.
Grants awarded under this program typically range from $79,139 to $4,893,936, with project durations of 1-5 years. The work is expected to be performed at academic facilities, field sites, scientific observatories, and research vessels across the United States, with opportunities for interdisciplinary and international collaboration.
Synopsis
The Marine Geology and Geophysics program supports research on all aspects of geology and geophysics of the ocean basins and margins, as well as the Great Lakes.
The Program includes:
- Structure, tectonic evolution and volcanic activity of the ocean basins, the continental margins, the mid-ocean ridges, and island arc systems
- Processes controlling exchange of heat and chemical species between seawater and ocean rocks
- Genesis, chemistry, and mineralogic evolution of marine sediments
- Processes controlling deposition, erosion and transport of marine sediments
- Past ocean circulation patterns and climates and
- Interactions of continental and marine geologic processes
