About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is soliciting applications for R03 grants supporting clinical and translational science research by CTSA Program KL2 scholars and recipients of re-entry supplements as they transition to independent academic researchers, with applications due October 19, 2026.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), small businesses, for-profit organizations, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), state and local governments, special district governments, independent school districts, housing authorities, eligible federal agencies, faith-based and community-based organizations, Hispanic-serving institutions, historically Black colleges and universities, tribally controlled colleges and universities, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, regional organizations, and U.S. territories and possessions. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities are not eligible; however, foreign components of U.S. organizations are allowed.
R03 grants support pilot and feasibility studies, secondary data analysis of existing data, small self-contained research projects, development of research methodology, and development of new research technology. Research may or may not include patient-oriented research. Projects must be completable in a short period with limited resources and generate preliminary data supporting subsequent R01 or equivalent applications.
Evaluation criteria include scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity relative to proposed work, and relevance to program objectives.
This opportunity is assigned CFDA 93.350 (National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences). Award ceiling, award floor, and expected number of awards are not specified in the source.

Update #2 · Latest ·
The purpose of this NOFO is to enhance the capability of NCATS CTSA Program KL2 scholars and recipients of re-entry supplements supported by the CTSA Program to conduct research as they complete the transition to fully independent academic translational scientists. These R03 grants will support different clinical and translational science research projects, including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary data analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. Research proposed in the R03 application may or may not include patient-oriented research. The R03 is, therefore, intended to support research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources and that provide preliminary data to support submission of a subsequent R01, or equivalent, application.
