About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is soliciting applications for small grants to support research by CTSA Program KL2 scholars transitioning to independent academic careers, with eligibility limited to scholars who received direct NCATS funding through the CTSA Program Institutional Career Development Core/Program (KL2/K12) and completed training within two years of the submission deadline. Resubmission eligibility extends 12 months past the first submission attempt.
Eligible applicant categories include public and private higher education institutions, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), small businesses, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and other nonprofit entities. Faith-based and community-based organizations, U.S. territories, and eligible federal agencies may also apply.
Small grants support pilot and feasibility studies; secondary data analysis of existing datasets; small, self-contained research projects; research methodology development; and new research technology development. Funded research may or may not include patient-oriented research and is designed to generate preliminary data supporting subsequent research project grant submissions. Projects must be executable within a short period with limited resources.
Peer review incorporates assessments of scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget justification relative to proposed work, relevance to program objectives, and fund availability. Applications undergo initial review by committees of biomedical research authorities, with recommendations forwarded to the NCATS Advisory Council for final award determination.
Assistance Listing 93.350 supports the program under the Public Health Service Act (42 USC 241 and 284) and 42 CFR Part 52 and 2 CFR Part 200. Posted February 18, 2026, this limited competition is a forecast for a formal NOFO with application deadline details to follow.
Forecast synopsis
The purpose of this NOFO is to enhance the capability of NCATS CTSA Program KL2 scholars supported by the CTSA Program to conduct research as they complete the transition to fully independent academic translational scientists. These small research grants will support different clinical and translational science research projects, including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary data analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. Research proposed in the application may or may not include patient-oriented research. This small research grant is, therefore, intended to support research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources and that provide preliminary data to support submission of a subsequent research project grant, or equivalent, application.
Awards are made under the authorization of Sections 301 and 405 of the Public Health Service Act as amended (42 USC 241 and 284) and under Federal Regulations 42 CFR Part 52 and 2 CFR Part 200.
