About this opportunity

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is soliciting applications from current or recently completed NHLBI K01, K08, K23, and K25 career development awardees for small grant support (R03), with an application due date of November 7, 2028. This is a limited competition restricted to K awardees only; foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.

Current K awardees may apply starting in the third year of their K award project period. Recently completed K awardees are eligible to apply or resubmit A1 applications if the earliest potential R03 award start date is within two years of their K award project period end date. Applicants must maintain a minimum of 40% protected research effort during the R03 award period through a combination of effort on the proposed R03 project and other research projects, irrespective of funding source. For current and former K23 awardees, the research proposed may or may not include patient-oriented research.

The R03 mechanism supports research projects completed within two years using limited resources, including pilot or feasibility studies, proof-of-concept studies, secondary analysis of existing data, small self-contained research projects, and development of new research methodologies or technologies. Award budgets are limited to direct costs of $85,000 per year for a maximum two-year project period. NHLBI intends to commit $3.9 million in FY2027, $7.8 million in FY2028 and FY2029, and $3.9 million in FY2030, funding approximately 29 new awards annually through FY2029.

The program objective is to facilitate transition to research independence by generating critical preliminary data and publications to support subsequent R01-equivalent applications. Review emphasizes research significance and innovation, rigor and feasibility, investigator expertise and institutional resources, and trajectory toward research independence. Scientific merit review occurs through the Center for Scientific Review with secondary review by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council. The NOFO was updated per NOT-HL-26-010. Assistance Listing 93.837 (Cardiovascular Diseases Research) applies.

The purpose of this NOFO is to solicit current or recently completed NHLBI K01, K08, K23, and K25 awardees for small grant support to expand their current research objectives or to branch out to a new study emerging from their K award research. This NOFO is intended to facilitate the transition to research independence for these NHLBI K awardees. These projects are expected to generate preliminary data to bolster a subsequent R01-equivalent application. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to, pilot or feasibility studies; proof of concept studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of new research methodologies or technologies, or creation of novel experimental model systems.Applicants are required to maintain a minimum of 40% protected research effort during the R03 award period.
