About this opportunity

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases is soliciting applications for a limited competition R03 Small Grant Program for career development award recipients, with rolling application deadlines on October 16, 2026, February 16, 2027, and June 16 in subsequent years through 2029; clinical trials of any phase are not supported.

Eligible applicants are current NIAMS-supported K01, K08, K23, and K25 recipients in the second to fourth year of their K award with at least one year of remaining K funding, or recipients of career development awards from federal or non-federal organizations focused on NIAMS mission areas who maintain at least 75 percent research effort and meet equivalent career-stage criteria. Prior R03 awardees from NIAMS and investigators who have successfully competed for R01 or equivalent awards are ineligible. Non-domestic entities are not eligible; foreign components and unfunded collaborations are permitted.

Awards provide up to $100,000 in total direct costs ($50,000 per year) for two years of support. The program supports pilot and feasibility studies, secondary analysis of existing data, small self-contained research projects, development of research methodology, and development of new research technology. Applications must include a research strategy for two years of work, a departmental support letter confirming continued mentorship and maintained research effort, a timeline for subsequent R01 submission, and a Data Management and Sharing Plan; preliminary data are not required.

Scientific merit review follows standard NIH processes, evaluating Significance and Innovation, Rigor and Feasibility, and Expertise and Resources, with consideration of human subject protections and vertebrate animal use as applicable. The earliest project start dates are May, October, and April following review cycles occurring in March, July, and November.

Synopsis

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) announces a program that provides NIAMS-supported K01, K08, K23, and K25 recipients the opportunity to apply for the Small Grant (R03) during the second to fourth year of their K award, as well as to provide support to recipients of significant career development awards from federal or non-federal organizations that are focused on the NIAMS' mission areas. Through this mechanism, which allows up to $50,000 direct costs per year for up to two years, the NIAMS is seeking to enhance the capability of scientists to conduct research as they transition to fully independent investigator. The R03 grant mechanism allows support of different types of projects, including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. In addition to the existing career development awards, the R03 is intended to support short term research projects to enable opportunities for a subsequent R01, or equivalent, application. Clinical trials of any phase will not be supported by this NOFO.This is a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for a Limited Competition that will invite application(s) from eligible organization(s) to apply. Please see Section III. Eligibility for additional information.
