About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications to support activities of National Primate Research Centers (NPRCs) through a limited competition with a September 25, 2026 application deadline. Only small businesses are eligible to apply. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are ineligible.

Awards range from $1,000 to $2,000,000 with project periods of 1 to 5 years. The funding supports establishment and continuation of specialized facilities that provide nonhuman primates and related resources for biomedical research. NPRCs centralize the physical and intellectual infrastructure required for proper husbandry, management, and research use of nonhuman primates—animal models most closely related to humans physiologically and genetically—and make these resources available to investigators on a national basis to complement NIH Institutes and Centers missions. Clinical trials are not allowed under this opportunity.

Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and general significance; technical adequacy of experimental design and approach; investigator or group competency; adequacy of available and proposed facilities and resources; necessity and justification of budget components; and relevance to program objectives. Applications receive peer review by committees of subject-matter authorities, with recommendations forwarded to the NIH Council of Councils for final review and recommendation.

This opportunity operates under CFDA 93.351 (Research Infrastructure Programs). Grantees expending $750,000 or more annually in federal awards must undergo single or program-specific audit. Financial and programmatic records must be retained for three years from the date the annual financial status report is submitted.

Synopsis

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages grant applications that support the activities of the National Primate Research Centers (NPRCs). Nonhuman primates (NHPs) are most closely related to humans, both physiologically and genetically. Therefore, NHPs are critical animal models for basic and translational research aimed at understanding human biology, both in normal and diseased states. Proper husbandry and management of NHPs require specialized physical and intellectual resources, which are most effectively and economically provided in centralized primate centers, the resources of which are made available to investigators on a national basis. The NPRCs provide these resources to investigators/grantees who utilize NHPs in biomedical research and thereby complement and help enable the missions of the NIH Institutes and Centers.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following:Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.See full Notice of Funding Opportunity for additional details on eligibility.
