About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is soliciting applications for Mentored Research Career Development Program Awards (K12) in Clinical and Translational Science through limited competition, with applications due September 28, 2027. Eligible applicants are public higher education institutions only; non-domestic entities and non-U.S. components of U.S. organizations are ineligible, though foreign components of U.S. organizations are permitted.

The program funds institutional research career development initiatives designed to prepare promising postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty scholars committed to independent clinical and translational science research careers—including tenure-track or equivalent positions—and to facilitate their career advancement and sustained research engagement across academia, industry, nonprofit, and government sectors.

NCATS will conduct initial peer review through committees of biomedical research authorities, with evaluation based on scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, relevance to program objectives, and fund availability. Recommendations advance to the NCATS Advisory Council for second-level review and award recommendation.

Grantees must retain financial and programmatic records for three years from the date of annual financial status report submission. The program operates under project periods of one to seven years and uses electronic fund transfer. Awards are made under CFDA 93.350, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences program, within the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health. Training-specific application instructions are required; applicants must consult both the funding opportunity announcement and designated training application guidance to determine required forms and submission procedures.
