About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is forecasting a limited competition grant opportunity under the John Lewis NIMHD Research Endowment Program (Assistance Listing 93.307) to strengthen research infrastructure and training capacity at eligible institutions of higher education to facilitate health disparities research; a specific application deadline has not been published.

Eligibility is restricted to public and private institutions of higher education that currently hold or formerly held HRSA Centers of Excellence awards under Section 736 of the Public Health Service Act and current or former NIMHD Centers of Excellence awards under Section 464z-4 of the PHS Act. Eligible institutions must have an endowment equal to or less than 50 percent of the national median of endowment funds at institutions conducting similar biomedical research and training of health professionals.

The program does not directly support research projects. Strategic objectives include improving institutional physical infrastructure and acquisition of research equipment, developing research-enabling technical expertise, expanding academic science programs relevant to scientific research, and merit-based recruitment of highly accomplished researchers for open faculty positions.

Applications will undergo NIH standard peer-review processes by an appropriate Scientific Review Group, with second-level review by the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NACMHD). Evaluation criteria include scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of design and approach, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, and budget necessity relative to program objectives. Only meritorious applications will be considered for funding.

This is a forecast; eligible institutions will receive direct invitations to apply. The number of awards and award ceiling are not specified in this forecast announcement.
