About this opportunity
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture is soliciting applications for one research project of up to $440,115 to improve efficiency and sustainability of laying hen and turkey production through integrated collaborative research and technology transfer, with applications due August 7, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The program requires non-federal matching funds equal to the grant amount, though NIFA may waive this requirement under specified conditions.
Eligible applicants are state agricultural experiment stations, colleges and universities, university research foundations, other research institutions, federal agencies, national laboratories, private organizations, individuals, and consortia comprising two or more of these entity types. All research must be conducted on laying hens, turkeys, or both.
Priority areas include disease prevention (vaccines, diagnostics, disease resistance, pathogen transmission reduction); antimicrobial resistance alternatives such as probiotics or prebiotics; nutrition and alternative or sustainable feeds; gut health improvements; and alternative housing systems under extreme weather conditions with precision monitoring and biosecurity enhancements.
Awards will fund projects with anticipated duration of up to 36 months, not exceeding five years total. Indirect costs are capped at 30 percent of total federal funds awarded. The program operates under Assistance Listing 10.245.
Applications will be evaluated on scientific merit, personnel qualifications and facilities, project relevance to program priorities and U.S. agricultural improvement, and budget cost-effectiveness. NIFA will conduct administrative screening followed by scientific peer review. Applicants must submit a project narrative not exceeding 18 pages, a data management plan, senior/key person profiles, and an R&R Budget form through Grants.gov. Award recipients must comply with federal regulations regarding research integrity, ethical conduct, and reporting requirements outlined in 2 CFR Part 200 and 7 CFR Part 3430.
